LinkedIn character counter
Paste anything and see it measured against every LinkedIn limit at once: posts, comments, your headline, your About section, connection notes and articles. It counts the way LinkedIn does, including bold and italic text that most counters get wrong.
- Every limit at once

Every LinkedIn character limit
Verified July 2026
LinkedIn does not publish these in one place and changes them without announcement, so most of the numbers you will find in a blog post are two revisions out of date. This table is checked against the live product each quarter.
| Where | Limit | What it actually means |
|---|---|---|
| Post (personal) | 3,000 | The composer hard-stops here. Pasting more silently truncates. |
| Company page update | 3,000 | Same limit as a personal post; no Page-specific allowance. |
| Comment | 1,250 | Applies to replies too. Long comments are a real reach play. This is the ceiling. |
| Headline | 220 | Raised from 120 a few years back. Mobile shows roughly the first 60. |
| About / summary | 2,600 | Only the first ~265 characters show before “see more” on a profile. |
| Connection request note | 300 | Free accounts get a limited number of personalised invites per month. |
| Article | 110,000 | LinkedIn articles (Pulse), not feed posts. Roughly 18,000 words. |
| Message (InMail body) | 1,900 | Subject line is capped separately at 200. |
| Job title | 100 | Per position on your profile. |
| Company name | 100 | As it appears on your Page. |
The limit that matters more than 3,000
Almost nobody hits 3,000 characters. Everybody hits the fold. LinkedIn collapses a post after roughly 360 characters on desktop, 280 on tablet and 210 on mobile, and replaces the rest with “…see more”. Everything past that point is read only by people who have already decided to tap.
Write for the mobile number
Most LinkedIn reading happens on a phone, so 210 is the honest budget for your hook, about two short paragraphs. If your first interesting sentence lands at character 400, it does not exist.
The fold counts lines, not characters
LinkedIn truncates at a rendered height, so these numbers are a close approximation rather than a hard cut. Short lines and deliberate line breaks reach the fold sooner than a solid block of text with the same character count.
Don’t spend the hook on a preamble
“I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately” costs 40 of your 210 characters and says nothing. Lead with the specific claim, the number, or the thing that went wrong; the context can live below the fold where it belongs.
Links and hashtags come last
A URL pasted into the first line burns visible characters and pulls the eye off the sentence. Put links and hashtags at the end, after the fold is fine, people who want them will expand.
Over the limit?
Trimming is easier when you can see where the fold falls and what the post looks like in the feed. The formatter gives you a live LinkedIn preview, bold and italic text, bullet lists, and a one-click button to strip formatting back out again.
Format it tighterQuestions
- What is the LinkedIn post character limit in 2026?
- 3,000 characters for a personal feed post, and the same 3,000 for a company page update. The composer stops accepting input at the limit, and text pasted beyond it is truncated without a warning, which is why it is worth checking before you paste rather than after.
- How many characters show before the “…see more” fold?
- Roughly 360 characters on desktop, 280 on tablet and 210 on mobile. The fold is measured in rendered lines rather than exact characters, so line breaks and long words shift it. Treat these as the practical ceiling for your hook, not a hard cut. Verified July 2026.
- What is the LinkedIn comment character limit?
- 1,250 characters, for both top-level comments and replies. That is a lot more room than most people use, and long, substantive comments on other people's posts are one of the cheapest ways to get reach without posting yourself.
- How long can a LinkedIn headline be?
- 220 characters. It used to be 120, and plenty of advice online still says so. Bear in mind that only about the first 60 characters are visible in search results and on mobile, so the keyword you want to be found for belongs at the front.
- How long can a connection request note be?
- 300 characters. Free accounts also get a limited number of personalised invites per month, so the note is a scarce resource. Spend it on a specific reason for connecting rather than a template.
- Do bold and italic characters count as more than one character?
- They shouldn't, and here they don't. “Bold” text on LinkedIn is really Unicode mathematical characters, which sit outside the Basic Multilingual Plane. Most counters measure them with JavaScript's string length, which reports two per character and makes a 1,600-character post look like it is over the 3,000 limit. This counter measures codepoints, so it agrees with LinkedIn's own counter on styled text.
- Do emoji, links and line breaks count towards the limit?
- Yes, all three. A URL counts at its full pasted length even though LinkedIn displays it shortened, so a long UTM-tagged link can quietly eat 150 characters. Each line break is one character. Most emoji count as one, but multi-part ones (a family emoji, or a skin-tone variant) are several joined codepoints and count as several.
