LinkedIn Character Limits: Every Limit That Matters in 2026

By Sam Cassman · Last verified

What is the LinkedIn character limit? A feed post allows 3,000 characters, but almost every part of LinkedIn has its own separate ceiling, and a few of them changed in the last two years. We checked each field against LinkedIn's own help pages and the live site. Read on for the full table: posts, headlines, the About section, messages, comments, company pages and polls.

Every part of LinkedIn counts characters, and the numbers are not the same from one field to the next. A post gives you 3,000. A headline gives you 220. A connection note gives you 300. This page is the full reference, checked against LinkedIn's own help pages, so you can stop guessing and stop trusting a 2023 blog post that never got updated.

The rest of this page explains the limits people actually search for, and where the visible cutoff sits, because that fold matters far more than the ceiling.

What is the LinkedIn post character limit?

A LinkedIn post allows 3,000 characters. That count includes spaces, line breaks, emojis and hashtags, so a post padded with tags reaches the ceiling sooner than the words alone suggest.

The number that changes how you write is not 3,000, it is the fold. Only about the first 210 characters on desktop and 140 on mobile show before the "…see more" link. Everything past that is one click away, and most readers never make the click. Treat those opening two or three lines as the whole post, and put the hook there.

Length past the fold barely moves engagement anyway. When we compared each creator against their own posts, text-only length made no measurable difference, and what you attach mattered far more than how much you wrote. The full breakdown is in how long a LinkedIn post should be.

What is the LinkedIn headline character limit?

The headline allows 220 characters. The catch is visibility: in search results, connection requests, comment threads and the top of your profile on mobile, only about the first 60 to 70 show. Lead with the role and value, keep the keyword-stuffing for the end where it is truncated anyway, or drop it entirely.

If the headline is the hard part, our free LinkedIn headline generator drafts options that fit inside the limit.

What is the LinkedIn About (summary) character limit?

The About section allows 2,600 characters. Like a post, it is folded: roughly the first 300 show before "See more" on desktop, fewer on mobile. The opening two lines decide whether anyone expands it, so open with the thing you most want a stranger to know, not a warm-up sentence.

What is the LinkedIn comment character limit?

A comment allows 1,250 characters, and unlike a post it shows in full with no fold. That makes a substantive comment a genuinely different surface from a post: the whole thing is read. It is often the highest-leverage 1,250 characters on the platform.

How long can a LinkedIn connection request note be?

The note on a connection request allows 300 characters, and that figure is the same on Free, Premium, Sales Navigator and Recruiter. What differs is not the length but the frequency: free accounts are capped at a handful of personalised invites per month (the commonly observed number is five), after which you can still connect but without a note. Paid plans lift that cap.

Shorter notes tend to land better than notes that fill the full 300, so the limit is rarely the constraint that matters.

LinkedIn message and InMail limits

Message typeLimit
Direct message to a connection8,000
InMail subject200
InMail body2,000

A direct message to someone you are already connected to is generous at 8,000 characters. InMail, the paid message to someone you are not connected to, is tighter: a 200-character subject and a 2,000-character body. Both InMail figures are worth a quick check against your own account, since LinkedIn has adjusted them before.

Company Page and profile field limits

These are the limits that quietly truncate a page or profile if you write to the old numbers:

FieldLimit
Company name100
Company tagline120
Company description2,000
Experience title100 per role
Experience description2,000 per role
Skill80 per skill
Recommendation3,000

Poll limits

A poll question allows 140 characters and each option allows 30, with a maximum of four options. Worth knowing before you draft the question, because 140 is short and the platform will not let you save a longer one. Note that polls were the worst-performing format in our study, down about 58% against the same creator's plain posts, so the tight limit is rarely your biggest problem with a poll.

Do hashtags and mentions count toward the limit?

Yes. Hashtags and @mentions count toward the 3,000-character post limit like any other text. There is no separate hashtag allowance. Five hashtags is five chunks of your visible space and your total count, which is one reason a wall of tags is a poor trade.

Character limits are only half the spec problem. The other half is pixels: the LinkedIn image sizes that survive the mobile crop and the exact LinkedIn banner dimensions cover the visual side of the same questions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the LinkedIn post character limit?
3,000 characters for a feed post, including spaces, emojis, line breaks and hashtags. Only about the first 210 characters on desktop and 140 on mobile show before the '…see more' fold.
What is the LinkedIn headline character limit?
220 characters. Only around 60 to 70 of them show in search results, connection requests and comment sections, so the front of the headline does the work.
What is the character limit for the LinkedIn About section?
2,600 characters. Roughly the first 300 show before the 'See more' cutoff on desktop, so the opening lines matter most.
How long can a LinkedIn connection request note be?
300 characters, on every plan. Free accounts are limited to a handful of personalised invites per month; paid plans remove that cap but keep the same 300-character length.
What is the LinkedIn comment character limit?
1,250 characters, and unlike a post the whole comment shows without a 'see more' fold.

I'm Sam. I built Flypost after watching too many good businesses sit on years of material (blog posts, call transcripts, case studies, half-finished decks) and post almost none of it.

I write everything here myself. When I claim something works on LinkedIn, it's because I tested it first-hand or ran the numbers across our own data. Where I'm working from a small sample, I'll say so. I'd rather be useful than certain.
